C. Singing an Instrumental Solo w. Recording
II) MelodicParaphrase A)Using the “Sonny Stitt” Concept :
A Phrase of the Melody answered with a comment where it fits. I also refer to this as the “Billie and Prez” way)
III) Harmonic Voice Leading A. Students Play Their “Homework” of Voice Leading Lines on “Another You” and/or “Out of Nowhere.”
IV) Listening:A. We Listen to Bird’s “I’ll Remember April”w.StringsB. We Listen to Lee Konitz’ Singing of “April” ( Use PDF of Lyrics)
V) "Take Your Time and Keep Your Focus” How to Learn a Phrase by Understanding Which Elements are Used ( scales, arpeggios, chromatics ) and Identifying the “ Diatonic Numerics”
A. Bob Plays and Analyses an “Improvised” Type of Phrase
B. We play the phrase in several “Symmetrical Intervalic Combinations “( 1/2 Steps, Whole Steps, -3rds , etc.)Assignment for Next Class:
VI) "Tonal Visualization” Mental Preparation That Helps You to “Avoid Making the First Mistake”
Exercises:
A. Sing “ Another You” using Classical or Numerical Solfeggio
1. Play Melody in Different Keys B)Reciting Chord Changes in Different Keys:
Think from “Function to Name of Chord and Not the Other Way Around.”
“Think of it like having a Chessboard (or Piano Keyboard). On the Ceiling or even Better: Inside Your Mind.”
