A. ”Straight Melody”
1) As it might appear on the Sheet Music. You only have “Tone”and “Dynamics” for Expression.
B. ”Straight Melody” but “Syncopated”- Think of the “Big Band Style”and “Dancing”( Basie, Ellington, etc.)
C. Playing the Melody with “Basic Voice Leading Lines”on the Cadences (3rds to 7ths, 5ths to ♭9th or ♯ 9ths , etc.) used as “Fills” in the Appropriate Spaces.
D. Playing the Melody with “Line Cliches” on the Cadences in the Appropriate Spaces.

C) ”Voice Leading Lines”

2. Listening: Great Examples of “Paraphrase and Melodic Reconstruction”
A) Lester Young’s “I Never Knew”- We listen to Prez and then to Peggy Lee and Sinatra’s versions.
B) Charlie Parker’s “Out of Nowhere” - We listen to Bird and the Ella Fitzgerald versions.
3. Analysis of Tunes Using the “House of Harmony” Technique
4. Explanation of “Line Clichés” ( PDF’s Used)
A) Incorporating them into “Another You “ (#6 in “Paraphrase and Melodic Re-Construction“)
