WHAT'S IN THIS CLASSES
 
MC 23:  “Target” Notes & Making “Wrong” Notes Sound Right, Rhythm Study: Billie’s Bounce (LEVEL 2)

1. Singing and Ear Training

A) Students Sing Prez’ Solo on “Lady Be Good” , Bird’s “Yardbird Suite” ,or another solo of their choice. ( Prez’ “ Boogie Woogie” or “Lester Leaps In” or Bird’s “Billie’s Bounce”)

B) We Drill Students on the Singing of WT , Minor, and Diminished Scales.

2. Harmonic Voice Leading Lines
 
A) We Explore Voice Leading Lines on II V I Ascending the Dorian Mode ( Part 1).
     
a) Bob gives examples and students try it too.
      
b) The students sing the lines identifying as they sing.
           
i)The functions of the notes within the Chordal Movement ( Ex. 5th of II-7 to #9 of V7 to Major 7th ofI Major).
            
ii) The identity of the note within the key (Ex. in key of C same movement= 6 to +6 to Major 7th.

3. Targeting

A) We introduce the concept of “Targeting” the principal notes in our Voice Leading Lines.
          
B) We show examples of how to use “Wrong” notes ( Also referred to as “Avoid”notes) as we continue to make our chart of “Movements.”

4. Listening
 
A) We Listen to “There will Never Be Another You” from “Chet Baker Sings.”

B) Assignment : 1)To sing along with both the vocal and the solos on this cut.2)Learn the Melody.

C) We listen to the Nat “King” Cole vocal version and the Bud Powell Trio version of “Another You.”
        
 a) Assignment: To sing melody with the Bud recording.

5. We Analyze the Movements in “Another You”in Terms of the “House of Harmony”

6. Bob plays the “Melody Game “ with Isaac, Gary , and students.

7. Rhythm Study

A) Students Clap or Tap Rhythms of Melody of “Billie’s Bounce” While singing melody then without singing melody.
