WHAT'S IN THIS CLASS
 
MC 20: Line Movements on 2-5-1, Harmonic Movements & Events Within a Tune: Cherokee & More Rhythmic Studies

1. Singing.
  
A) Students Sing Prez’ Solo on “Lady Be Good,” Bird’s “Yardbird Suite”or another solo of their choice.
   
B) Also have some students sing WT, Diminished and Harmonic and Melodic Minor Scales.
  
C) Introduction to singing “Voice Leading Lines.”
        
a) With Isaac playing II V I.
 
b) Background Have students Ascend Dorian Mode and Sing the Movements Within a Whole Step from “Dissonance”( Tension) to “Consonance” (Resolution).

2. We Follow “Bouncing Ball” Concept Through “House of Harmony” on “Cherokee.”

3. We Learn This Tune “Incrementally/Movement to Movement by Function"
Bob, Isaac and Gary Demonstrate this in Different Keys . Students also get to try this.

4. We Create A “Harmonic Voice Leading Line”on “Cherokee.”

* Assignment: Students Write a “Melodic Eighth -Note Oriented Chorus” on “Cherokee” For Next Week.

5. Rhythm Study.

A) Students Clap or Tap Rhythms of Melody of “Yardbird Suite” While singing melody then without singing melody.

B) Students Tap or Snap “Pockets.”
 
a) Along with Bird’s Early (1942) Recording of “Cherokee “
 
b) By Themselves with No Recording While Singing “Cherokee”
 
i) Regular Pocket (Beats 2 and 4)
 
ii) Long Meter”DeepPocket”( aka “The Slow Underneath”), (1/2 Time)
 
iii) Alternating the Two.
