1. Singing of Solos.

A) Lester Young

B) Any solo from Miles’ “Solar”
 
C) Singers Sing “What Is This Thing” along with “Hot House” head and Solos from
“Massey Hall” recording.

3. LearningVocabulary

A) Transposing by Understanding the Function of the Notes Used and Not Just Their Names.
 
B) Use “Solar”PDF #3 Bars 1and 2 ,5 and 6, 10 and 11/ Have Students Play These Phrases in Different Keys/ Show Method of Practicing this Intervalically.

4. Quick Study of New “Beginners “PDF of “Solar”Scale Study.

5. Rhythm Studies

A) “Meet the Beats”- Acquaints the students with “Up Beats “ and “Down Beats”-Them students must identify various beats
 
B) The “Pockets”
            
a) Regular (2 and 4)
            
b) 1/2 Time (“Deep”or “Long” Pocket”)
             
c)1/2 of “b” (“Bottom” Pocket)

C) Have Students Sing “What Is This Thing”  Acapella while Snapping, Tapping , or Clapping the Various Pockets.
           
D) Have Them Do the Same Exercise on Pockets Along with the Massey Hall “Hot House.”

6. What Is This Thing”Phase#2 “Harmonic Options”
 
A) Minor to Minor”and “Harmonic Minor to Major” on “A” Section (PDF #1).

B) Explain Use of Melodic Minor on Dominant 7th Chords (PDF#5),(PDF#7).

C) Dorian of Key a Minor 3rd Above ( i.e. “Relative Major”), (PDF#2), (Also use Melodic Minor).

D) Harmonic Shift of Dorian or MelodicMinor of -3rd key on II-7♭5 to Dorian or MM of ♭5sub (one more -3rd above) to Resolution. (PDF#3) and (PDF#5), (again).

E) Harmonic Shift from Dorian of -3rd key to Diminished (PDF#4).

F)Diminished Scales and Diminished Patterns on “What Is This Thing.” (PDF#8), (PDF#6).
